Games will boost India's appeal

India's decision to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games will help boost the international profile of the country, claims a holiday tour firm.

Annonline.com believes that the event will enable the local tourist industry to develop a brand image for the country and therefore increase the number of holidaymakers opting to take flights to Mumbai and other Indian cities.

Charles Glanville from Annonline.com explained the Commonwealth Games has led to the firm developing new tours to take in the key sporting venues. He also explained that the Games have encouraged greater investment in restoration work on the country's historic attractions.

Tips for a Backpacking Holiday of a Lifetime

Backpacking can be great fun and immense joy if backpackers follow certain guidelines and tips. A combination of skill sets along with valuable knowledge can leave backpackers enjoying their trip without any worries and problems.

If you are planning for a backpacking adventure, it is highly recommended that you get familiar with basic backpacking guidelines and survival skills. Such information and knowledge can prove to be highly beneficial for backpackers as it helps them in enjoying their trip absolutely. Additionally, these skills provide a certain sense of safety and security to the backpackers.

Backpackers or even individuals on solo travel tours will surely benefit themselves by being knowledgeable about various such tips and skills before venturing into the wild, trekking the mountains, surfing the sea or loosing themselves in the vastness of the barren desert.

Destination Selection

The first step it to decide the destination where you would like to have your holidays. Our globe is a big place and choosing a destination can be a tiresome job. However, there are some pointers and features that may assist you in making the choice. Geography, the amount of time you can afford and the weather are few basic factors that may play a part in your decision. One should keep in mind that summers in UK do not mean summers throughout the world. Choose a location which has an agreeable weather and one which will be the most convenient to you. However, backpacking in off-seasons can get you cheap deals.

Research

After deciding your choice of destination it is recommended to conduct some research on the particular location before actually booking your airline tickets. It must be noted that several parts of the world experience instability at some point or other and it certainly isn?t desirable for you to find yourself in the midst of some political turmoil. Carefully check online resources for latest and correct information.

Furthermore, it won?t hurt you if you find out something about the accepted customs of the country that you intent to visit. Women would not like to find themselves offending local sensibilities by wearing something inappropriate.

Finding about cheap flights and train timetables will assist you if you plan to travel around the country.

Backpacking Skills

Backpacking may seem something that is simple and fun but serious backpackers know that it is quite a lot more than that. It is a serious sport that requires a lot of skills and knowledge.

Here is a list of some basic backpacking tips and skills that you should know venturing on to your trip:

  • Backpacking Etiquettes ? Backpackers must respect the nature and do nothing to destroy the beauty the environment.
  • Survival Skills ? Basic survival skills help you in the times of emergency and threatening situations. A skilled backpacker should be able to handle critical needs of food, shelter and water.

  • Fundamental knowhow of first aid is indispensable as it can turn out be life saver for your or others around you. The first aid knowledge is very essential and is even included in all frequent flyer travel tips.

These are simple guidelines that will ensure that you will have a safe and enjoyable journey. Majority of these tips are plain commonsense, however few of them are important for your safety and well-being.

India 'should bid for Olympics'

Australia's sports minister believes that India should consider hosting the Olympic Games following its Commonwealth Games success. Mark Arbib explained that India has managed to exceed expectations with its Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and should be given the opportunity to host larger international events, reports the Press Trust of India.

"It was a wonderful display of Indian culture. For Australians, every Australian I spoke to, it was wonderful," said the minister. He added: "People responsible for organising should be congratulated."

Demand for flights to India could increase if the country did secure the Olympics but Mr Arbib did raise some concerns by stressing that hosting such a sporting competition can take around ten years of planning ? as seen in Sydney in 2000.

Jet Airways reports 'robust' growth

Passenger growth in this quarter, compared to the same period in 2009, stood at 15 per cent.

India tourism 'benefitting' from Commonwealth Games

India is set to see a boom in visitor numbers following the success of the Commonwealth Games, claims the secretary of India's tourism ministry.

RH Khwaja explained the Indian tourism sector will experience a rise in demand in coming years as the sporting event has helped to boost the country's international profile and could lead to more travellers taking flights to India.

"India today is emerging as a major economy of the world with growth rate of more than eight per cent per annum. The tourism industry in India is set to grow at an even higher pace," said Mr Khwaja, according to PTI.

The number of foreign tourists arriving in October increased by nine per cent compared to 2009's levels. It is thought that figures from the tourism ministry show the Commonwealth Games was responsible for around five per cent of the visitors during last month.

Flights to Trivandrum take One to God's Own Country

Trivandrum is a not to be missed destination for anyone taking cheap flights to India. Be it tremendous natural beauty or astounding historical monuments, Trivandrum crawls with a plethora of excellent sights, sounds, and smells.

Trivandrum makes for one jewel of a holiday destination. Full of intoxicating natural delights like palm fringed beaches, huge tracts of verdant tropical greenery, captivating dream like sunsets, virginal lagoons, and gently sloping hills, Trivandrum captures the imagination. Almost everyone who takes one of those cheap flights to India makes it a point to visit Trivandrum as the destination is amongst the most popular places in Asia. Being the erstwhile home of many kings and dynasties, Trivandrum is also a treasure trove of historical monuments. Here are some of the prized jewels from Trivandrum.

Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India and the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean makes for an exhilarating spot. Kanyakumari is famed for the worship of the goddess Devi Kanya and pilgrims flock to the destination in hordes. A little offshore is the Vivekananda Memorial, the meditation spot of the famed Swami Vivekananda. The mandapam here offers an excellent insight into the wonderful blend of diverse architectural styles from different parts of India. Kanyakumari remains one of the biggest reasons for spending on Trivandrum flight tickets.

Kovalam

The globally renowned Kovalam beach is just some 16 km from Trivandrum and has been luring travellers right since the 1930s. Taking herbal massages, swimming, and sunbathing are amongst the numerous leisure activities at the beach. Kovalam also stays alive with delightful cultural performances. Shopping zones, cheap affordable cottages, swimming pools, Ayurvedic health centres, and the famed Ashoka Beach resort are some of the other draws here. Kovalam, along with Kanyakumari, remains another major reason for hopping on to some flight to Trivandrum.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

Dating back from 16th Century, the wooden Padmanabhapuram Palace is a dazzling piece of Trivandrum?s unique architectural style. While the floors have been polished with a mixture of local plant juices, crushed shells, egg whites, and coconuts, the ceilings are carved with exquisite rosewood floral patterns. Besides architectural wonders, the palace is also full of marvellous interesting items such as secret underground passages, Lord Krishna?s pictures, chairs carved with Chinese designs, mural paintings, Saraswati temple, granite dance hall, and Belgian mirrors. One of the more gory attractions of the palace is a hanging cage, where prisoners died an excruciating death at the beaks and claws of eagles. The palace has an outer cyclopean wall, which was erected without the use of mortar.

Varkala

The calm serene hamlet of Varkala has plenty of tourist magnets. This sea resort is known for its mineral rich water springs that supposedly have many medicinal properties. Two of the biggest attractions in Varkala are the Janardhanaswamy Temple and the Sivagiri Mutt.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

The huge sprawling Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary spells sheer bliss for any nature enthusiast. Eucalyptus plantations, long sloping hills, and fauna life like elephants, sambhar deers, lions, and leopards together make the sanctuary a wonderful getaway to the wild side. Many travellers have discovered that the joy visiting the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary makes up a lot for the money spent on those cheap flights to India.

Neyyar Dam

Taking a picnic to the Neyyar Dam is a great way to have a day trip in Trivandrum. Boating in the Neyyar Lake here and wondering through the wilderness of the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary are two of the most popular pastimes for visitors. The sanctuary gives one the chance to get up close to exotic animal life like tigers, elephants, wild boars, wild buffaloes, different snake species, and porcupines. For a further taste of wildlife, one can always head to the nearby lion safari park and crocodile breeding centre.

Ponmudi

This pristine hill resort is a trekker?s paradise. Trees blooming with colorful flowers, serene orchids, and natural springs make the place a treat to the eye. While going to Ponmudi, numerous travelers also stop at ?Golden Valley? for a quick dip in the refreshing cool crystal clear mountain stream there.

Let?s have a look at the various aspects of the games and the necessary information.

Budget and the Games Village

The estimated budget for hosting the CWG 2010 has exceeded one billion pounds, excluding the development of non-sports related infrastructure like airports and roadways. This makes it the costliest Commonwealth Games ever. A big chunk of that budget has been spent on the Commonwealth Games Village. The games village includes nearly 30 apartments and more than 1200 flats for athletes and officials. It is a state-of-the-art residential project that features world class security system and two level basement car parking, as well as a number of shopping and recreational facilities.

Transport

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is renovated and modernised to match world class standards. The airport?s recently build Terminal 3 has enhanced the airport?s passenger capacity to nearly 40 million commuters a year. The city has extended road infrastructure with new flyovers and bridges. Additionally, the Delhi Metro has increased its operations to put up with more people and encourage the usage of public transportation during the ongoing CWG 2010 in Delhi.

Venues

Several stadiums are being used to hold various sporting events. These stadiums are Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Siri Fort Sports Complex, Thyagaraj Stadium, SPM Swimming Pool Complex, Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Indira Gandhi Arena, Delhi University Sports Complex, Talkatora Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, RK Khanna Tennis Complex and Yamuna Sports Complex.

Events

Athletes from more than 70 countries are in Delhi and are competing in a variety of sporting events, such as archery, aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rugby, lawn bowls, squash, shooting, tennis, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

Tourist Attractions in Delhi

Apart from the Commonwealth Games, the city of Delhi itself is a great tourist attraction that charms visitors with its unique mystique and intrigue. The city offers numerous holiday options for the travellers taking flights to Delhi to enjoy the common wealth games matches. The Old Delhi is full of beautiful Islamic structures, whereas the New Delhi is a majestic reflection of the glorious British Empire days. The greenery of Lodhi Gardens, the tranquillity of Lotus Temple and the Grandeur of Red Fort all blend together to make Delhi tourism such a big hit. You can travel many popular spots to enjoy your holidays to Delhi apart from CWG 2010.

Don't Miss Bastille Day - July 14 - Paris, France

Don't miss Bastille Day, France's national holiday that commemorates the storming of the Bastille at the start of the French Revolution. The big day is July 14, with celebrations beginning the night before.

You can fly from Montreal to Paris from July 7 or 8 to July 17 for only $726 Canadian dollars, including tax, with Air Transat.

France's national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille at the start of the French Revolution. Crowds line the Champs-Elysées for a military parade led by the President, and Parisians party until dawn as fireworks explode over the Trocadéro.

The evening before the big day is spent dancing in the Bastille square and at numerous balls that are organised around the city. Worth a look-in are the many parties held by the fire service in their stations, at which the fire-fighters themselves are usually the star attraction (their uniforms providing a lure for the ladies).

On the big day itself, the big parade on the Champs-Elysées sees jets fly in formation as top military brass march from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde. Bringing up the rear and receiving the loudest applause are the fire brigade, perhaps suffering from a hangover or two. It's wise to arrive early if you want to get a good view.

The partying continues all day and later thousands of people come together again at the Champ-de-Mars to watch the fireworks at the Trocadéro. On top of all that, most bars and clubs stage their own celebrations, so take your pick. If you're not in Paris, don't worry: every single village in France has their own dance, with champagne, fireworks, street fun and lots more. Everyone should take in at least one Bastille Day in their lives.

Although nothing now remains of the Bastille fortress itself, the place where it once stood remains an enduring symbol of the ideals of liberté, egalité and fraternité.
